The reality
The pain you actually have.
Generic accounting software is built for accountants. This is built for a mobile mechanic who finishes a job at 5pm covered in dust and just wants to get paid.
01
Every job’s a callout — you’re standing next to the customer’s car, half an hour on the phone chasing part prices, and the last thing you want is another twenty minutes typing up an invoice at the kitchen table that evening.
02
Parts and labour need to show separately on the invoice for the customer to understand what they paid for — and for you to prove you didn’t hide a margin on the parts. Most generic invoicing apps roll them into one line by default.
03
MTD ITSA is coming for anyone self-employed above £50k — full-time mobile mechanics hit that easily. But almost every mobile mechanic we’ve talked to hasn’t heard of it. The digital records start now, not next January.
Got an HMRC question?
Ask HMRC is a free, grounded-in-gov.uk assistant that knows what matters to mobile mechanics — MTD ITSA, VAT, expense categories, and mileage rules for the van. Five questions a day, no signup, no card.

“I'm a self-employed mobile mechanic earning around £55k — how does MTD ITSA affect me?”
What it does
Three things. Built for van-based service work.
No bloat, no “multi-entity reporting”.
Voice-to-invoice from the van
Describe the callout, the vehicle, the diagnosis, the parts, the labour hours. In the words you’d use telling a mate at the end of the day. Honest Invoices extracts the details and builds a UK-compliant invoice with parts and labour on separate lines.
Mintex pads, Brembo discs, a litre of brake fluid, ninety minutes labour — each captured properly. Not lost in a lump-sum “service” line the customer can’t verify.
Parts + labour split, VAT handled if you're registered
Every invoice shows parts and labour as distinct sections with individual line items. Customers see what they paid for the Brembo discs versus what they paid for you to fit them — no margin-hiding accusations.
If you’re VAT-registered, toggle it on and the invoice applies 20% VAT with the required VAT invoice fields (VAT number, net + gross totals). Domestic customers get a clear breakdown; commercial fleet clients get a compliant invoice their accountant can process.
MTD ITSA quarterly records built as you go
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is live now for sole traders earning over £50k. April 2027 catches £30k+; April 2028 catches £20k+ — which is almost every full-time mobile mechanic.
Every voice invoice is captured as a digital record in the MTD-required format from day one. When production HMRC credentials clear (we’re sandbox-tested at 12/12 pass and in review with HMRC’s SDS team), quarterly submissions go live inside the app. Read the MTD compliance guide for what actually applies to you.
From the founder
Built end-to-end against HMRC’s APIs.
Honest Invoices is built and run by Vix Hawley. The MTD ITSA integration was built by hand — OAuth, fraud-prevention headers, the full Self-Employment Business and BSAS APIs. It took months. The full HMRC sandbox journey passes 16 out of 16 steps with proof on file.
Most accounting platforms are built for accountants. This one is built for mobile mechanicswho don’t want to spend their evenings doing admin. £15/month. Locked. No price hikes, ever.
FAQ
FAQ for mobile mechanics.
Can I invoice on the driveway before I leave?
Yes — that’s the point. Voice-to-invoice takes about 30 seconds, PDF is emailed to the customer immediately, and you’re on to the next callout. Nothing to write up that evening.
How does it handle parts I bought last week but only fitted today?
Add parts to the job as you spend on them (receipt photo, or a quick voice note at the parts counter). When you invoice, they roll in automatically. Nothing to reconcile.
I do a mix of domestic and small-fleet work. Does this cover both?
Yes. Domestic customers get a straightforward invoice; commercial (fleet, taxi, courier) clients can be flagged as commercial for the purpose of statutory late-payment interest — you’re legally entitled to charge 8% over BoE base rate + a compensation fee on overdue commercial invoices. Domestic invoices don’t get that language.
Do I need to worry about CIS?
No — CIS is the Construction Industry Scheme and applies to construction subcontract work only. Mobile mechanics aren’t in scope, so this doesn’t apply to you.
Do you handle VAT?
Yes. Toggle VAT registration in settings, and Honest Invoices applies 20% VAT on parts and labour with the required VAT invoice fields.
I earn over £50k — does MTD apply to me from April 2026?
Yes, provided the £50k is your self-employment income (not your household income). Try the MTD wave calculator to check your exact position.
