For UK roofers
Built for roofers. Compliant invoices in 30 seconds.
Voice-to-invoice for UK sole-trader roofers. Built around the invoice shape loss adjusters actually accept — cause of damage on the line, storm versus wear-and-tear distinguished, loss-adjuster reference number on the header — so the insurance company pays out in days, not months.
What you say
“Slate replacement at 12 Beech Close — two slipped slates on the south side, half an hour on the roof, ten minutes on the chimney pointing. Two slates and a bit of lead flashing. Eighty quid all-in.”

The reality
The pain you actually have.
Generic accounting software is built for accountants. This is built for a roofer who finishes a job at 5pm covered in dust and just wants to get paid.
01
Roofing jobs are weather-dependent and short — you don't want to be sitting in a café typing up Tuesday's slate swap on Friday. By then you're on a different roof.
02
Insurance jobs need a proper invoice with materials itemised. Most roofers hand-write a quote on the back of a job ticket — and lose the £180 of lead flashing they spent.
03
A week of rain knocks out three planned slate jobs and an emergency leak callout reschedules a re-roof — and three months later you can’t remember which property got the £400 first-fix payment and which one still owes for the lead flashing on the chimney visit before the re-roof started.
Got an HMRC question?
Ask HMRC is a free, grounded-in-gov.uk assistant that knows what matters to roofers — CIS, trade registration fees, VAT rules and the rest. Five questions a day, no signup, no card.

What it does
Three things. Built for trades.
No bloat, no “multi-entity reporting”.
Voice-to-invoice that speaks roofing
Describe a re-roof, a chimney repoint, a gutter clear, a slipped slate, in the words you actually use. The AI extracts the time, the materials, the customer name, and builds a UK-compliant invoice with sequential numbering, your business details, and your payment terms.
Talk into your phone from the van before you drive off. Done.
Insurance-shaped invoices loss adjusters accept
Insurance work has its own paperwork shape. The invoice header needs the loss-adjuster reference number, the policy number, and the date of the storm or damage event. Each line needs cause-of-damage on it — “storm Eunice slipped slate” and “age-related felt failure” pay out very differently, and a mixed-cause job needs the split made explicit. Honest Invoices structures every invoice line with an optional cause-of-damage field and a separate insurance-reference block at the top, so loss adjusters approve in days rather than bouncing your invoice back with “we need this restructured” six weeks after the roof is finished.
CIS labour-and-materials split, automatic
When you’re sub-contracting on commercial roofs under CIS, every invoice needs labour and materials shown separately — otherwise the main contractor deducts CIS on the whole lot, including the £800 you spent at SIG Roofing.
Most roofer CIS exposure comes from main-contractor work on new-build sites and commercial roofing — domestic insurance jobs and direct-to-customer re-roofs are paid gross. Honest Invoices tags each invoice at creation, splits labour from materials, and runs the year’s CIS-deducted total separately from gross-paid work so your year-end reclaim is a one-line figure, not a forensic exercise involving a shoebox of damp PDS slips.
MTD-ready records, built end-to-end against HMRC
Every job you record — a re-roof, a chimney repoint, a slate replacement, a gutter clear, an emergency leak callout — is a digital record HMRC’s MTD ITSA APIs recognise. Quarterly updates and BSAS are fully tested in HMRC’s sandbox environment (16/16), with production approval in progress — they go live the moment our production credentials come through. Final Declaration support is planned for the following release.
Roofing income is weather-shaped — a wet autumn and a storm-heavy winter can compress two months of work into three weeks of flat-out jobs. Digital records from 6 April 2026 keep the quarterly figures honest across those spikes, so the 7 August submission isn’t a reconstruction exercise from memory and damp receipts.
From the founder
Built end-to-end against HMRC’s APIs.
Honest Invoices is built and run by Vix Hawley. The MTD ITSA integration was built by hand — OAuth, fraud-prevention headers, the full Self-Employment Business and BSAS APIs. It took months. The full HMRC sandbox journey passes 16 out of 16 steps with proof on file.
Most accounting platforms are built for accountants. This one is built for rooferswho don’t want to spend their evenings doing admin. £15/month. Locked. No price hikes, ever.
FAQ
FAQ for roofers.
Do you handle insurance / loss-adjuster invoices?
Yes. Every invoice itemises labour and materials with quantities, dates, and supplier names — exactly what loss adjusters ask for. You can add notes per line for the cause of damage if needed.
What about CIS on commercial roofing sub-work?
Roofing has a fairly clean CIS line — domestic insurance work and direct customer re-roofs are paid gross; commercial roofing under a main contractor or principal site contractor is CIS-deducted at 20% or 30%. Honest Invoices flags each invoice at creation, keeps the running year-end total ready for Self Assessment, and separates it from your gross-paid insurance income.

I'm a sole-trader roofer earning £55k. Am I in scope for MTD ITSA?
Yes — from 6 April 2026. A sole-trader roofer on £55k from a mix of insurance work and direct re-roofs is in scope from day one. The first quarter covers 6 April to 5 July with a 7 August 2026 deadline. Roofing income is seasonal, which makes consistent digital records more valuable across the year, not less.
Honest Invoices keeps your records in the right shape today and will submit directly through HMRC’s APIs the moment our production credentials land. You have until 7 August.
Will my price go up in two years?
No. £15/month is the price the day you sign up, and the price you’ll be paying in three years. If we launch a higher tier in future, you stay on £15 — locked, in the terms, not just a promise.
